RALPH C. WILSON, JR. CENTENNIAL PARK FOOTBRIDGE COMPETITION
DESCRIPTION: Our team was one of the four finalists of this competition to provide a new central connection between both sides of the planned Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park in Buffalo, NY. Our proposal was an asymmetric weathering steel structure with fixed supports at both abutments, which were embedded into the topography on each side. This arrangement allowed to pass over the I-190 highway and the existing Amtrak rail line with a single 108 meter span with no need for intermediate supports. The smooth slope of the terrain at both ends allowed the bridge to merge effortlessly with the surrounding land so that it emerged directly from and returned to the terrain itself, seamlessly integrated into each bank, connecting green to green.
